The use of an extended ocean voyage as a metaphor for life goes back to the Greek classics. Indeed, the trials, dangers and challenges...balanced by beauty, teamwork and delayed gratification...all make a sail a symbol of life's path.
The families of twenty-two giddy, nervous, excited students gathered on Court House Dock at South Boston's Fan Pier Tuesday for the annual send-off ceremony.
The happy throng included grandparents, siblings, best friends and dogs.
Once again, this year's crew includes several children of alumni, faculty and staff.

The send-off was followed by a gala reception at the Lighthouse Ballroom at the Seaport Hotel. The sight of the
Westward gliding out under staysails provided a special thrill. A few hours later, they dropped anchor in historic Gloucester.
On November 21, after a lifetime of thrilling adventures, challenges and accomplishment, they will reach into San Juan Harbor!
